The award named for perseverance

At a primary-school graduation she placed a new honour in a child’s hands, and told him the borough had seen his courage.

On the graduation day of the Point Fortin Anglican Primary School, Alderman Fortune-John presented the inaugural Kobe Nathan Sandy Award for Perseverance. The award recognises a student who shows unwavering determination, resilience in the face of obstacles, and a real devotion to learning.

Kaleem Alexander received it. Her congratulations were direct and warm: his commitment and perseverance are inspiring traits in the younger generation. She also thanked Alderman Sandy for trusting her with the presentation in his absence.

It is a small ceremony with a large meaning. A borough that names perseverance, and then looks a child in the eye while it says so, is teaching the right lesson. She has spent her public life making room for that lesson: in classrooms, at youth gatherings, and in the quiet work of a committee that asks what a young person in Cap-de-Ville or Fanny Village will be able to build.
